At the age of 90, of McCandless Township, Sister Mary Providence went to her eternal reward on Friday, March 16, 2018. Sister Mary Providence was born in Butler, and entered the Sisters of Divine Providence on January 2, 1945 from St. Mary Assumption Parish in Herman, PA. She made Final Vows in 1950. Sister Mary Providence attended Duquesne University, received her Bachelor degree in Math and Biology from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA and her Master's degree from Villanova University. For many years, she ministered as an educator, mainly on High School and University levels. Her first ten years were spent in the Pittsburgh and Massachusetts areas. For most of her life after that, she worked as educator, pastoral minister, and missionary in Utuado and Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. She taught in the Catholic Universities in Ponce and Arecibo, Puerto Rico and the American University in Cuba. As one of the founding members of the Sisters' mission in Santo Domingo, she served the elderly and infirm and began a center where nourishing meals, activities and prayer were enjoyed by those who gathered. In 2008, Sister Mary Providence was honored by LaRoche College as their Woman of Providence, an award given annually to a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence whose life of service is a compelling example of God's Providence made visible. Sister Mary Providence was preceded in death by her parents, Charles J. and Catherine Kuhn Kriley, brothers Anthony, Francis, Charles and Wendelin, and sisters Margaret, Cecilia Geibel, Sr. Sylvester, CDP and Teresa Portzer. Sr. Mary Providence is survived by sisters, Elizabeth and Sr. Mary Kriley, CDP and brother, Bernard, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of Divine Providence and their Associate Members. Viewing will take place at Providence Heights on Tuesday, from 2- 4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Wake Service at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, noon- 3:30 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 4:00 p.m. in Mother of Divine Providence Chapel. Burial will follow in Providence Heights Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Sisters of Divine Providence, 9000 Babcock Boulevard, Allison Park, PA 15101.
